Judges 6:14-16; 7:19-21

• How does God bless us when we are meek?

What does it mean to you to be meek? Is it a positive thing or a negative thing? Is it something you aspire to be, or something you’re avoiding?

The Bible says that God blesses the “meek,” and I think it means something along the lines of Librarian Tammy. Let me explain.

In middle school, our librarian’s name was Miss Tammy. Miss Tammy was a 5-foot-nothing woman who wore a lot of paisley and whose eyes were framed by cerulean glasses. She was quiet, small, and everlastingly gentle. In the library, as you know, it’s polite to be quiet. As you also probably know, junior highers are not naturally gifted at being quiet all the time. You can see where the conflict arose. But Miss Tammy was patient, kind, and sweet, while also maintaining the boundaries of the library with convicted confidence. Miss Tammy was not physically imposing, loud, or demanding. But we respected her exactly the way she was. We respected her meekness.

I think this is the portrait of what God calls us to be. Gentle, patient, loving, and firm in our calling.
