READ: Matthew 11:28-30

(Answer the question/s below in your app notes)

• When we honor God by resting on the Sabbath, in what ways do we benefit?

“Mommy,” little Janie quipped at the breakfast table in between gulps of Fruity Pebbles. “Why does the Bible never mention pancakes?”

Mom laughed. “Maybe they didn’t have them back then,” she offered.

“But the Bible talks about breakfast foods,” Janie said.

Mom considered this. Fish and loaves? Pretty brutal way to start the morning, she thought. Fig trees? Bread and wine? What was Janie talking about? “Where does it talk about breakfast foods, honey?”

“It talks about eggs!” she said enthusiastically. “Jesus tells us to take his scrambled eggs so life will be easy!”

The actual reference Janie was astutely remembering was Matthew 11:29, in which Jesus offers us his yoke, because he is “gentle and humble in heart.” Yoke, however, was not an item on a brunch menu (egg yolk), but a wooden beam in the ancient world that was placed across the necks of two oxen so they could pull heavy loads together.

Jesus wasn’t promising an easy life with no effort. He was offering shared effort. A way of living where we don’t carry everything alone. When we rest with Jesus, especially through the gift of Sabbath, we’re reminded that life isn’t all on our shoulders. We’re invited to move at Jesus’ pace, share the load, and experience peace that comes from trusting in Him.
